Supporting Kamasi Washington on his North American tour is no mean feat for any band in such a crowded field. The jazz-funk quartet Butcher Brown can add that accolade to their rapidly improving musical CV.
Pulsing from the nerve centre of Jellowstone Studios in Richmond VA, Butcher Brown takes careful note of the history and legacy of jazz and throws caution to the wind following the musical legacy of Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd and Herbie Hancock et al. There is also a distinctive hip-hop sensibility to the band epitomised by Stones Throw producer DJ Harrison showcasing his considerable chops on keys in Butcher Brown.
Garage punk jazz funk on the low end of the dial gives way to delicate and elegant compositions, which can be seen in their collaborations with other great artists including Nicholas Payton, Nigel Hall, Dionne Farris, and Christian Scott.
Straight out of the underground, a steady rumble is building and it’s called Butcher Brown.
Opening the show will be a solo performance from Italian multi-instrumentalist Tommaso Cappellato.
